Last Sydney show for the year

The last Mister Ott show for the year will be Friday 13th November at Venue 505.

If you haven’t seen the band live yet, this is your chance. Due to current various commitments with other bands this will be the only Sydney performance. There will be new music on show as well as all the hits from Drop It Like It’s Ott. Check out the reviews to see how we fared in the press and jump on to Bandcamp to buy a copy of the album if you haven’t already.

Mr Ott
DROP IT LIKE IT’S OTT (Earshift)

★★★½

It even had its own name, “Ethio-jazz”, a unique jazz offshoot that Mulatu Astatke nurtured in Ethiopia in the early 1970s, and it soon became a benchmark of hipness. You can hear why in Matt Ottignon’s band Mr Ott, which plays original music drenched in Ethiopian rhythms and textures that is so infectious as to erode my suspicion of projects so subservient to idiom. The grooves, a jigsaw of minimal contributions from horns, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums and percussion, have an edge of exoticism as well as creating surges of energy. Wah-wah guitar, almost the style’s birthmark, is here supplied by Ben Panucci, who also produces some startling solos. Ottignon’s tenor and baritone saxophones intermittently blaze like bushfires through rhythmic thickets in which Eden Ottignon’s bass plays a hypnotic part. Ellen Kirkwood provides slicing trumpet, Daniel Pliner the chunky or slippery keyboards and Dan Kennedy and Steve Marin hold down the all-important drums/percussion duties. JOHN SHAND

Mister Ott with dancers + Slowpoke Rodriguez + El Chino @ 505 Saturday June 28

505 with dancers lo res

We have a massive night planned. Mister Ott will be in extended 8 piece mode with Peter Farrar on sax and Steve Marin on percussion and I’m proud to announce that there will also be four incredible dancers assembled by Fenix Icatu, specialists in dancehall, house, popping etc. We saw Fenix and Miguel last year at 505 and I am very excited to say that Fenix will be back again this time with 3 new dancers in tow.

To kick off the night we have Slowpoke Rodriguez, a band made up of members of the Strides, Watussi and Deep Sea Arcade and featuring  trumpeter Ken Allars. If you want to hear what they sound like check their band camp page here

Doors open at 6pm for those who want to have dinner there and get in early for the cocktails! The poster says 7:30pm doors, but they will be open from 6.

News update July 2013

Hi everyone.
First, thanks to everyone who came to the Double Single launch at 505 last month. It was a huge success and it was great to see so many people up and dancing! There are a number of great reviews for the gig, plus we have some cool you tube footage. Mister Ott now has it’s own website and we have 4 gigs in Sydney over the next 4 months.

  • MISTER OTT Debut for SIMA – August 10th 2013

SIMA POSTER

Mister Ott is performing its debut for SIMA, and I’m lucky to be their poster boy for their new program. I have played the Sound Lounge stage so many times over the years and I can’t wait to hear my new music there. Very exciting. There is something special about this stage, or maybe its the audience, but every time I play here I feel inspired to play my best.

In the band for this evening will be regulars Ellen Kirkwood – trumpet, Eden Ottignon – bass, Dan Kennedy – drums. Special guests for the night are Carl Morgan – guitar and Luke Sweeting – piano and organ. Carl is a fantastic soloist with chops to burn who played with us last at Jazzgroove in March. I played with Luke in Canberra last November and he really embraced the Ethiopian roots of the music. His sound on hammond organ is one of the best I’ve heard.

Also if you haven’t checked it out already, go see the clip of the single Mattaraja – directed by the one and only Rachael Brown!
